RAWLINS, Wyo. (AP) - An elementary school student brought a handgun to school in Rawlins and showed it to a classmate, but police say the student did not shoot the weapon or threaten anyone.

Carbon County School District 1 Superintendent Mike Hamel tells the Rawlins Times that the student, whose name and age weren’t released, showed the firearm to a classmate outside before school started Tuesday.

Hamel says the classmate advised the student who was carrying the handgun to bring it to a playground aid. Subsequently, both students brought it to a school supervisor’s attention and the authorities were soon notified.

Hamel says the student with the gun was taken to the office and the school locked down for about an hour.

Police Lt. Richard Hooper says the student did not have malicious intent.
