TILTON, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire man who was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer as he was crossing the street in a wheelchair scooter was a Vietnam veteran who received two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and multiple other medals, his son said Wednesday.
Francis Houghton, 70, was struck on Tuesday afternoon as he was crossing East Main Street in Tilton. Christopher Houghton, his son, said his father was coming to visit him when he was hit.
“It was 50 feet from the house. It literally happened right across the street,” Houghton said.
Responding officers found Francis Houghton in the road with serious injuries. His son said his father died on the way to the hospital.
Tilton Police Chief Robert Cormier said the tractor-trailer left the scene and witnesses followed it. He said the driver, who was cooperating with police, said he did not know he hit someone.
No charges have been filed. Police are still investigating.
After serving in the Army, Francis Houghton worked as a custodian for over 35 years in the Concord school district. He lost his wife, Rhonda, to pancreatic cancer last year.
His son said he’s received condolences and many fond stories from former students about “Mr. Frank.”
“He loved kids, he was all about the kids,” Houghton said.
