NEW YORK (AP) - Police say an armed man has been shot and wounded by an officer who was responding to a shooting in the Bronx.

Police say plainclothes officers on patrol heard gunshots just before 8 p.m. Wednesday. They observed a man with a silver firearm and ordered him to drop the gun.

Police say the man pointed his firearm at them and one of the officers fired one round, striking the suspect in the torso.

The suspect was hospitalized in stable condition. No officers were injured.

A possible victim of the suspect was later found with a gunshot wound. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

On Sunday, officers on Staten Island opened fire on a man carrying a knife, killing him and wounding one of the officers at the scene.
