BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) - A Florida man convicted of deliberately running down and killing a state trooper standing along an upstate New York highway has died in prison, where he was serving a life term without possibility of parole.
The New York state corrections department website lists 64-year-old Almond Upton as “deceased” as of Sunday. A cause of death wasn’t released.
The Melrose, Florida resident was convicted of first-degree murder for driving his pickup truck at 93 mph into 42-year-old Trooper Christopher Skinner on Interstate 81 near Binghamton in 2014 as Skinner was issuing a ticket.
Defense attorneys had argued Upton had bipolar disorder and was in a “manic state” at the time. Upton fled the crash scene and was arrested as he stood naked in a field.
Upton apologized during sentencing in November 2016.
