MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Police have made an arrest in the rape of a 3-year-old girl in Alabama after nearly three decades.

Mobile police Lt. Matthew James tells WPMI-TV that 46-year-old Timothy Robinson was arrested Friday in the 1989 assault.

James says re-interviewing the woman was challenging because her family never told her what happened. He says DNA from a rape kit connected Robinson and a grand jury has indicted him.

James says that when the kit’s test results were received, Robinson was already in jail serving time for a sexual abuse arrest involving an 8-year-old in 2011. Robinson was released in October, but taken into custody again last week when he went to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office to register as a sex offender.

It’s unclear if Robinson has a lawyer who could comment.
