Fire breaks out at apartment complex

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. (AP) - Officials say an early-morning fire broke out at an apartment building in Vermont.

WCAX-TV reports the fire happened around 7 a.m. at a housing authority complex in Springfield.

Fire Deputy Chief Scott Richardson says the fire was centralized to a living room with some of it extending into a hallway and a kitchen.

Officials say a mother and son living in the second-floor unit were able to get out, but the unit was badly damaged. A unit on the first floor also sustained water damage.

State investigators have responded to the scene to determine a cause. Fire officials say the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
