MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - The University of South Alabama says it will raise money for an on-campus football stadium after the city of Mobile refused millions of dollars in funding.
President Tony Waldrop announced the fundraising campaign Friday with the goal of constructing a stadium for use starting in 2020.
South Alabama has played home games at the city-owned Ladd-Peebles Stadium since it began football, and it asked the city for $10 million to help build a new stadium on the campus.
City Council members refused the request, prompting the school’s fundraising effort. Waldrop says officials want to finance a stadium without raising tuition on students.
Trustees in June approved plans for construction of a 25,000-seat football stadium at an approximate cost of $72 million.
