TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - Electric rates are going up in northeast Mississippi’s largest city.
Local news outlets report the Tupelo City Council on Thursday approved a 1.5 percent increase starting Oct. 1 for the more than 15,000 customers of Tupelo Water & Light.

The city-owned utility says it’s passing on the rate increase from the Tennessee Valley Authority. The federal agency has implemented a series of 1.5 percent rate increases in an effort to reduce its debt, which is now at $24 billion.
