OPINION:
In previous pelection years the economy has dominated the voter-issues list, but in this era of the media the topic du jour can be any one newspapers and TV choose to feature. The cited poll results favoring the restriction of immigration would appear to be an anomaly unique to the 2018 election (“Immigration is the winning issue,” Web, Aug. 1). These results have shown that logic prevails over sympathy.
Certainly the separation of families was a grievous error but one that should have been corrected by unification — and then, for families that are here illegally, deportation. However, as a Jew I totally agree with the temporary ban on Muslim immigration. There has been virulent anti-Semitism by those Muslims admitted. A different decision should be made for those coming in from Latin American countries. Are they fleeing to save their lives or for economic reasons? If for the former, we should open our gates. If for the latter, while sympathizing, we must ensure they obey the current laws relating to ultimate citizenship.
