SHELBY, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina deputy was shot twice while confronting a man wanted on probation violations.

Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman told reporters the shooting happened late Tuesday between Shelby and King’s Mountain. He says the deputy confronted the suspect, who opened fire with a handgun after a verbal exchange. The deputy shot the fleeing suspect’s car.

Officials say 23-year-old Dakota Greene was arrested elsewhere and charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He’s being held on $2 million bond. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer; a phone listing for Greene is disconnected.

Norman says the deputy involved is a 2-year veteran of his department. He was hospitalized, but Norman hopes he will make a full recovery. He declined to elaborate on his wounds.
