FRENCH SETTLEMENT, La. (AP) - A Louisiana grand jury has indicted a police chief on a felony count of malfeasance in office over his use of a fuel card.
The Advocate of Baton Rouge reports French Settlement Police Chief Harry Brignac was indicted Tuesday after being arrested in July. French Settlement is a village in Livingston Parish.
The 71-year-old is accused of using a village fuel card to buy $60 worth of gas for his personal pickup truck. Sheriff Jason Ard says the unauthorized purchase was captured on surveillance video. Mayor Toni Guitrau says she brought questionable fuel charges to the sheriff’s attention after a review of fuel records revealed “discrepancies.”
Brignac’s attorney says the police chief mistakenly used the wrong card to fill up the vehicle. The attorney says Brignac, who is elected, doesn’t plan to resign from office.
