COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs has reopened five days after being pummeled by a hailstorm that killed at least five animals.
The zoo reopened Saturday after the hailstorm on Aug. 6 dropped baseball-size hail, injuring 14 people and damaging scores of vehicles.
The storm also killed two roaming peafowls, a peacock, a rare vulture and a duck.
A meerkat pup that’s been missing since the storm is presumed dead in a collapsed burrow.
Officials say the total cost of the damage from the storm is still being calculated, but the lost revenue from being closed is close to $500,000.
