As an independent voter and former law-enforcement officer, I can’t be the only one familiar with the wiretapping laws in this country. I’m wondering why no one from the Trump administration is bringing these laws to the forefront regarding former Trump attorney Michael Cohen illegally taping the president without consent (“Giuliani: Cohen betrayed Trump like ’Brutus put the last knife in Caesar,’” Web, July 30).

Wiretapping laws differ from one state to the next. In one state where I lived you had to get permission to tape a person’s conversation in a face-to-face meeting, otherwise it was considered an illegal wiretap. Most people know you need a warrant for that.

Another legal issue I don’t hear anyone talking about is that members of Congress have taken an oath of office. To put it into perspective, cops take an oath to serve and protect. If they violate that oath they can be brought up on numerous charges, including dereliction of duty, and fired. The Democrats in Congress are ignoring their sworn duty to represent the people of this country. By their own words they want to subvert the president of the United States by obstruction and subterfuge. They are all guilty of misfeasance and nonfeasance of office for not carrying out their sworn duty to represent the people. So why aren’t they being held accountable? You can bet that if someone in law enforcement did what they did, they would be jailed — or, back in the day, hanged.
