MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department is reminding drivers to be on the alert for moose this time of year.
The animals are on the move from wintering areas to spring feeding sites and are more likely to be crossing roadways this time of year, particularly after dark and in the early morning.
Drivers are urged to slow down or stop if they see a moose ahead and not to try to speed past them.
Drivers hit more moose in spring than at any other time of year. The department says 19 people have died in motor vehicle crashes with moose on Vermont highways since 1985.
