MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - A spring snowstorm was making travel difficult in winter-weary Minnesota, where school districts to the south called off classes Tuesday.
Unrelenting snow was expected to fall all day, making the commute home challenging in the Twin Cities and southern locations. Six to 8 inches of snow was expected to accumulate in the metro area, with 10 to 11 inches possible to the south in Red Wing and St. James.
Minnesota Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Gutknecht said travel will be difficult.
“The good news is that the temperatures will allow the salt to work. We are all ready for winter to be over, but it is not over yet. Drivers will have to slow down,” Gutknecht told the Star Tribune .
Hastings, Mankato and Winona are among the districts canceling classes Tuesday.
The National Weather Service posted a winter storm warning for areas south of a line from Canby to Hutchinson to the Twin Cities.
It feels like January,” said NWS meteorologist Bill Borghoff said. “April can see decent winter snowstorms.”
Tuesday night’s temperatures was expected to drop to the single digits in the Twin Cities and maybe even below zero north of St. Cloud, forecasters said.
