TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - The U.S. Forest Service says it expects to award about $3.7 million in grants for tree planting and restoring native vegetation in the Great Lakes region.
The funding will come from the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a multi-year program to deal with the lakes’ most pressing environmental problems.
The Forest Service says the money will be distributed to the best proposals it receives through May 11.
It’s looking for projects designed to reduce the effects of emerald ash borer attacks on trees; use green infrastructure to reduce runoff from degraded sites; and enhance coastal wetland filtration.
