BOSTON (AP) - The New England Newspaper and Press Association is revising the name of its First Amendment award after discovering the individual it was named to honor misrepresented his military record.

The organization said former New England Newspaper Association Executive Director Morley Piper made up stories about serving in the invasion force on and after D-Day, June 6, 1944.

The organization said that while the 93-year-old Essex, Massachusetts resident fought at the time of the D-Day invasion, he neither participated in the initial invasion nor was a member of the 29th Infantry Division as he had stated. The division suffered heavy casualties as part of the first wave.

Piper told the Salem News he was sorry. He said he participated in the invasion but well after the 29th Infantry stormed the beaches.
