BOSTON (AP) - A Massachusetts man convicted defrauding four people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison.
The Herald News reports that John Silvia Jr., of Somerset, was sentenced Thursday at U.S. District Court in Boston to 57 months in prison, two years’ probation and ordered to pay $360,000 in restitution.
The 68-year-old disbarred lawyer and former Somerset teacher and school board member was convicted at trials in 2016 and 2017 on 17 counts of securities, mail and wire fraud. Among his victims was a nurse who had cared for his wife while she battled terminal cancer, and a business associate who has since died.
Silvia in a brief statement said he “respected the jury’s verdict” and “regretted” any hardship he caused.
