BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - Minot officials will post signs at 15 locations around the city to signify the high water marks during the 2011 Souris River flood.
The city has chosen a design for the signs after conducting an online survey, the Minot Daily News reported. Minot State University students designed two options for residents to vote on.
The city will also place smaller signs at the water mark level to give perspective on depth. The total cost of the signage is expected to be less than $500.
Minot’s High Water Mark Initiative still needs to finish selecting locations for the flood remembrance signs in the valley.
“We want high traffic areas like the parks but also some really devastated areas - places where the crest was among some of the higher locations,” said city spokesman Derek Hackett.
The city will dedicate the signs at a ceremony on June 25, the anniversary of the flood.
The initiative is an effort to serve as a reminder and raise awareness of the city’s flood risk. Minot will receive points under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Community Rating System, which helps lower flood insurance premiums, for participating in the initiative.
The city currently has a Class 8 rating, which gives residents to a 10 percent discount on federal insurance premiums through FEMA’s insurance program.
