EXETER, R.I. (AP) - Police officers from across the country have gathered in Rhode Island for training on how to handle mass shootings and other potential threats at schools.

The three-day training hosted in Exeter by the National Sheriffs’ Association began Tuesday.

The lead instructor, Capt. Chris Gandia of Londonderry, New Hampshire, tells WPRI-TV that the training cannot eliminate risk at schools, but it can help to mitigate it.

Gandia said the training is also offered to school administrators and a major goal is to help police and school officials better understand each other.
