ELIZABETH, Colo. (AP) - Sheriff’s deputies say a woman shot and wounded her 23-year-old son after he allegedly broke into her eastern Colorado home and assaulted her.

The Denver Post reports James Mamich was arrested Thursday on suspicion of burglary, assault and criminal mischief.

The Elbert County Sheriff’s Department says the incident occurred Monday near Elizabeth, a small town 45 miles southeast of downtown Denver.

Mamich was being held in the Elbert County jail. Online jail records didn’t indicate whether he had an attorney.

Authorities say the woman called police to say she had shot her son and that she feared for her life.

Mamich was treated at a hospital and released Thursday. Investigators say he didn’t live with his mother but his address wasn’t released.

No charges have been filed against the woman.
