Several inches of snow fall in in April in western Maryland

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - An April snowstorm has dropped several inches of snow in western Maryland.

Spotters for the National Weather Service reported five inches of snow in Frostburg and two inches of snow in Cumberland.

Maryland State Police enacted a snow emergency plan for several hours in mountainous Garrett County, Maryland’s westernmost county.

A weather system is dropping several inches of snow throughout much of the northeastern United States.

Snow in April is unusual but far from unprecedented in Maryland. According to the National Weather Service, the latest that measurable snow has fallen in Baltimore is April 28. That occurred in 1898.

Public schools in western Maryland were already closed Monday for spring break.
