John Paul Stevens, retired Supreme Court justice, recently called for the repeal of the Second Amendment and is encouraging anti-gun protesters to do the same (“Former Supreme Court Justice Stevens: Repeal the Second Amendment,” Web, March 27). Justice Stevens argued that the amendment — which states that “a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” — is a “relic of the 18th century.” Justice Stevens is emphatically wrong.

Given the anti-American globalists and corruption elements operating within our government and the lawlessness in our society, it makes all the sense in the world for this amendment to be fully maintained in accordance with the Founding Fathers’ convictions. Someone may call 911 in the event of an emergency situation at their home, but it doesn’t mean that police will respond expeditiously. In some cases, even if they get there quickly, it may be too late.

Due to horrible immigration policies and lack of enforcement of current immigration laws, many gangs and a plethora of drugs have been allowed to come through our borders. Crime and murders have been rampant in many cities throughout America. In Chicago, there are strict gun-control laws, but murders are off the charts. Criminals will always have guns.

Law-abiding citizens should not be penalized for what the criminals do. They have the right to defend themselves should the need arise. Mao Zedong, Joseph Stalin and Adolph Hitler all knew the value of disarmament, and so do the globalists and leftists in our government.
