OPINION:
Disdain for President Trump is worn as a badge of honor. It seems you can never display contempt for him too prominently. Mr. Trump was the Democrats’ darling when his novel candidacy was the human wrecking ball in the Republican primary — and his nomination would have been God-sent if one were gullible enough to believe in God.
These days, Mr. Trump’s intelligence cannot be underestimated nor can he be disparaged beyond the limits of good taste. If this maliciousness had been applied to President Obama, it would have been swatted down with the reminder that Mr. Obama was a graduate of Harvard Law School. Well, Mr. Trump is a graduate of the Wharton Business School and has significant experience in his field of study. But I suspect Mr. Trump delights in this condescension and the negative publicity he gets, much like a pool-hall hustler who wants challengers to underestimate his abilities.
The “get-Trump” mentality has intensified beyond the expected detractors in the Democratic National Committee, their media organs and Hollywood. The other day a man approached me on the bus and began ranting about Mr. Trump. Knowing the pitfalls of discussing politics with strangers, I changed the topic to religion.
