PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say a man is facing criminal charges after allegedly dressing as a salesman, placing random household objects into brand-name electronic boxes and selling them under false pretenses to unsuspecting people.
The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday that 36-year-old Jeremy Williams was charged with identity theft, computer crime, theft, attempted theft, forgery, unlawful possession of heroin and other charges.
Court documents say Portland police spoke to a man in March who reported making contact with someone named “Nik” on an internet marketplace and arranging a meeting with “Nik” to buy a $200 computer.
Documents say the man bought the item from Williams, which turned out to be a book.
Documents say a similar incident happened 10 days later and that Williams was arrested after police posed as an online buyer.
It wasn’t immediately known if Williams has an attorney.
