A California man is battling officials in Chino Hills over the illegal construction of a child’s playhouse.

Homeowner Robert Adomeit recently bought extra land so that his daughter might have a place to play in a cramped neighborhood, but the decision continues to cost him. Lawmakers are fining the father hundreds of dollars because a playhouse he’s building for daughter Zoe, 3, runs afoul of city codes.

Current laws in Carbon Canyon prohibits construction on plots without an existing home.

“They keep telling me I can’t build, and I have to stop and they’re going to issue penalties if I continue to build,” Mr. Adomeit told a local CBS affiliate on Tuesday.

The homeowner said it was “a huge surprise” when officials made him aware of the city’s code.

“Six months ongoing, I don’t know why the city is fighting it so hard,” Mr. Adomeit said. “I just want what’s safe and best for my daughter. I just want my daughter to have a safe place to play.”

A Chino Hills planning commission may have a public hearing on Mr. Adomeit’s code amendment request in June, the station reported.
