BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Bennington, Vermont, Select Board says it supports a newly renewed local arts council.

Members of the board voted unanimously to renew the Bennington Area Arts Council as the town’s official arts council at a meeting this week. The Bennington Banner reports the council as originally sanctioned in 1989 before going into a period of dormancy.

Chairman Tom Jacobs says the culture and the arts are closely tied to economic development.

Council Vice President Greg Van Houten says the arts council now has nonprofit status and “a full and active board of directors,” along with partnerships with local arts institutions.

Select board members also voted to pledge $1,000 to an arts event sponsored by the council.
