Firefighters raise thousands for boy who wished to be famous

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP) - Firefighters in Rhode Island have raised thousands to honor a boy whose dying wish was to become famous in China.

WPRI-TV reports that the Portsmouth Fire Department sold T-shirts this month to benefit the Dorian J. Murray Foundation in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The department presented a check for $5,200 to Dorian Murray’s mother, Melissa.

On-duty firefighters from about a dozen departments wore the “Go Gold” shirts.

Dorian’s wish last January to be famous in China before he went to heaven took off on social media with the hashtag DStrong. People and celebrities around the world sent him well wishes. He died March 9, 2016 after battling a rare form of pediatric cancer.
