WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - A police standoff at a Wilmington home prompted by a fatal shooting has ended after officers entered the residence and found only a dog.
Wilmington police said in a statement Thursday night that officers responded to a reported shooting around 4:30 p.m. They found a 28-year-old man with an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.
A preliminary investigation indicated a possible suspect had fled into a home nearby. Authorities tried to make contact with anyone inside. After that was unsuccessful, a team entered the home.
A police spokeswoman tells The News Journal only a pit bull was inside.
Police say one officer who encountered the “aggressive” dog sustained injuries to both hands and was taken to a hospital in stable condition.
An investigation is ongoing.
