AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The parents of a Maine man killed on Christmas 2015 have dropped their appeal to have the state’s Victims’ Compensation Fund pay for funeral costs.
The Kennebec Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2wK2eet ) Jeffrey and Susan Williams agreed to dismiss their appeal on Friday. The couple’s son, 35-year-old Eric Williams, was killed in a shooting.
The Victims’ Compensation Program denied the Williamses’ request, citing a law that prevents compensation for people who committed criminal conduct that contributed or caused their death. Authorities say Eric Williams committed a burglary hours before the fatal shooting. Investigators say the motivation for the fatal shooting was revenge for the burglary.
The Williamses did not return a phone message left Wednesday seeking comment on the dismissal.
