MONONGAHELA, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say firefighters responding to a call at a Pennsylvania home found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest and a dog also shot.

Emergency responders in Washington County said volunteer firefighters in Monongahela were called to the home shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday and quickly extinguished a fire in the basement.

Officials said they found a 50-year-old man upstairs with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was flown to Mercy Hospital and is expected to survive. A pit bull was also found with a gunshot wound.

State police said a firearm was removed, but Trooper Robert Broadwater said it’s unclear whether that was the weapon used.

Broadwater said investigators are trying to determine whether the man’s gunshot wounds were self-inflicted or whether someone else was involved.
