The White House said Thursday that at least 16 people have died in Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

White House homeland security adviser Tom Bossert said Puerto Rican authorities have confirmed the deaths. It wasn’t clear how many were killed by the storm and how many have died in the aftermath, with critical shortages around the island.
