DEER PARK, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island boy is in a hospital with serious injuries after police say he walked out into the street and was hit by a truck.

Three-year-old Marco Hernandez-Pineda, of Brentwood, pulled away from his mother and walked onto a street in Deer Park Wednesday. He walked out just as a truck was passing and was struck.

Police say the 39-year-old driver stopped immediately and stayed on the scene. A passer-by drove the boy and his mother to a nearby medical office, from where he was transported to a hospital.

The toddler was later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he’s listed in serious condition.

Police are investigating the accident.
