Sir James Dyson is renowned for his eponymous vacuum cleaners, but the British inventor hopes to clean up on the auto showroom floor come 2020, with his company’s debut of an electric car, the BBC reported Tuesday.
Thus far, the project is still in its early stages, the BBC reported, and Mr. Dyson is keeping things close to the vest, including projected mileage per charge and the car’s top speed.
“Competition for new technology in the automotive industry is fierce, and we must do everything we can to keep the specifics of our vehicle confidential,” he wrote to his employees in an email, the BBC said.
While the electric motor for the vehicle is ready for manufacture, the design of the car itself is still on the drawing board, according to the BBC. What’s more, a site for the production facility has still yet to be selected, although additional design work is planned to get underway early next year on the site of a closed Royal Air Force base in Wiltshire, England.
The “radical and different” vehicle may well fly out of the showroom when it’s unveiled, but it won’t be parked in the average motorist’s garage. The vehicle is expected to be priced for wealthier clients, not the “mass market,” the BBC said.
