PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The city of Portland says major work is needed to an old landfill before a solar farm can be built, putting the project in jeopardy.
The city has pushed back the installation of nearly 3,000 solar panels on the 4-acre landfill, which was supposed to happen by year’s end.
The Portland Press Herald reports (https://bit.ly/2vx1QNs ) that the goal was to take advantage of higher rates paid for solar but those rates will drop in the new year with changes to so-called net-metering rules.
The Ocean Avenue Landfill was closed in the 1970s and capped in the 1990s. Over the years, the top has been compromised by settling and recreational use.
City officials say they’re working with Maine Department of Environmental Protection to install vents and add soil to the top.
