ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - About 1,500 people pre-registered to take part in the 9/11 Heroes Run in Annapolis.
The run began at 2 p.m. Sunday. Usually a few hundred more participate as walk-ups.
It’s sponsored by the Travis Manion Foundation. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion, a Naval Academy graduate, who was killed by a sniper in Iraq in 2007.
It also marks the 10th anniversary of the death of another academy graduate, Major Doug Zembiec, who was killed about two weeks after Manion.
Ryan Manion, Travis’ sister, says the foundation has about 100,000 members. She says about 50,000 people participate in just under 60 races.
Proceeds raised from the event support the Travis Manion Foundation’s programs assisting wounded veterans and families of fallen servicemen.
