CAMDEN, Tenn. (AP) - Unsafe levels of a cancer-causing metal have been found at an abandoned Tennessee landfill, and state regulators said last week they’re awaiting new results to determine if there were errors in the lab or samples’ quality.
The Tennessean reported Sunday groundwater tests at a Camden landfill in June measured more than five times the acceptable limit for cadmium. Residents who blame the landfill for nausea, foul odors and other health problems filed a lawsuit against its operator last year.
Environmental Waste Solutions received permission from the state Environment and Conservation department to accept “special wastes” defined as “difficult or dangerous to manage” from aluminum, coal and railroad industries.
State Solid Waste Management director Patrick Flood says high silt levels and different cadmium amounts in duplicate tests raised possibilities of false-positives.
