BETHESDA, Md. (AP) - A house fire in Maryland has killed one man and sent another to the hospital.

WTOP-FM reports firefighters found smoke coming from all three levels of the Bethesda home Sunday afternoon.

Montgomery County Fire Battalion Chief Dan Ogren says a 31-year-old man who escaped from the home told responders that his friend was still inside the house. Crews entered the home, extinguished the fire and located the missing man in the basement. Ogren says the man was dead when firefighters found him.

Officials do not know how the fire started, but Ogren says firefighters who entered the home indicated there were hoarding conditions in the basement.

The identities of the victims have not been released. The condition of the 31-year-old man is unknown.
