RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A former jail guard in North Carolina accused of providing an inmate drugs has been sentenced to 18 months in prison.
The Raleigh News and Observer reports 25-year-old Andrew Richard Byrd pleaded guilty Wednesday to two felony counts of providing drugs to an inmate and one felony count each for conspiring to deliver heroin and possession of a controlled substance on jail premises.
Byrd worked as a detention officer at the Wake County jail in Raleigh.
Sheriff’s investigators say on July 28 Byrd conspired with inmate James Bagley and Travis Waddell to smuggle five strips of Suboxone to Bagley. Suboxone is a medication used to treat opioid addiction. It’s unclear if Waddell was a county employee or an inmate.
Investigators also say Byrd gave heroin to Bagley on Aug. 16.
