UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA: WHITE NATIONALISTS ARE NOT PERMANENTLY BARRED
The top attorney for UF made the statement in a letter she sent Friday to a Gainesville attorney representing the National Policy Institute and Spencer. Amy Haas said the university will try to accommodate Spencer if he makes a new formal request for a speaking date. The university last month denied the group’s request to hold an event on Sept. 12, citing recent violence at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
SHERIFF: DEPUTY KILLS ARMED WOMAN FOLLOWING 911 HANG-UP
A Lee County Sheriff’s Office news release says deputies responded to a Fort Myers Beach home Thursday evening following a 911 hang-up call. They tried to speak to 54-year-old Debi Lynn Thorkelson, and the release says she pointed a firearm that appeared to be a rifle at a deputy. Officials say the deputy feared for his life and safety and discharged his firearm. The woman died from her wound.
GOVERNOR SCHEDULES EXECUTION FOR MAN CONVICTED OF 2 MURDERS
Gov. Rick Scott signed a death warrant Friday for 57-year-old Michael Ray Lambrix, also known as Cary Michael Lambrix. The execution is set for Oct. 5. Lambrix was convicted of the 1983 killings of Clarence Moore and Aleisha Bryant. Prosecutors said he killed them after an evening of drinking at his trailer near LaBelle, about 30 miles from Fort Myers.
MAN GETS 9 YEARS FOR POSSESSING PIPE BOMBS, GRENADES, GUNS
Federal court records show 25-year-old Steven Pace was sentenced Thursday. He pleaded guilty in January to possessing four destructive devices and for knowingly possessing firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. Pace and his girlfriend, Katie Smith, were arrested in February 2016 following a Florida Department of Children and Families welfare check for a then-5-year-old child living in their Venice home.
SMALL PLANE CRASHES INTO TAMPA BAY, 4 RESCUED
Petty Officer Michael De Nyse says the plane crashed into Tampa Bay on Friday morning shortly after taking off from Alfred Whitted Airport. The spokesman says two people swam to shore while a nearby Coast Guard ship rescued the other two. He says no one was seriously hurt.
