MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The state of Vermont is encouraging residents to be prepared in case of fire in their homes.
Last month, Republican Gov. Phil Scott proclaimed Oct. 8-14 Fire Prevention Week with the added theme of “Every Second Counts-Plan 2 Ways Out.”
In a typical house fire, residents may have as little as one to two minutes to escape after the smoke alarm sounds.
Vermont Division of Fire Safety Director Michael Desrochers says pre-planning helps ensure “everyone will draw upon to snap into action and escape” in the event of a fire.
A good plan includes two ways out - a door and an escape window for every sleeping room.
He says windowless bedrooms, particularly those in basements, pose a significant threat to loss of life in a fire.
