PHOENIX (AP) - A Surprise man is jailed on suspicion of kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and other charges after a nearly 15-hour standoff with police at a Phoenix hotel.

Phoenix police say 45-year-old Gary Laverne Minor also is facing charges of aggravated assault, endangerment, discharging a firearm at a residence and unlawful flight from law enforcement.

Minor is accused of holding a woman against her will in the hotel room.

The situation began when police tried to stop a truck with a stolen license plate about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Minor abandoned the vehicle and ran into his hotel room near Interstate 17 and Peoria Avenue.

Surprise police say the woman Minor was holding texted a family member that he was armed.

The unidentified woman wasn’t injured during the standoff that ended about 5 p.m.
