Harrisburg homes affected by sinkhole to be demolished

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - The city of Harrisburg has decided to demolish a group of homes affected by a sinkhole.

WPMT-TV reports that the city will purchase the 52 homes and demolish the block. Residents who live in the affected houses will be paid for their properties through a $5 million grant funded by federal, state and county agencies. Most of the properties are estimated to be in the $50,000r range.

Sinkholes first appeared on the block more than three years ago. Mayor Eric Papenfuse says the area will be converted to a green space.

The city began inspecting and closing homes this week. Officials hope to have all the residents of the block moved out by the end of 2017.
