NAPLES, Fla. (AP) - The driver of a tractor trailer that slammed into a car killing two women in 2011 has been sentenced to life in prison plus another 15 years.

The Naples Daily News reports that 52-year-old Michael John Phillips was sentenced Friday. He was convicted previously of manslaughter while driving under the influence.

The crash killed 35-year-old Jennifer Jenkins and 34-year-old Kathleen O’Callaghan, who were on their way from Naples to a friend’s birthday party in Orlando.

Jenkins’ husband, who was traveling in another vehicle behind them with the couple’s 2-month-old daughter, witnessed the crash.

Phillips tested positive for methamphetamine, and the judge during sentencing said Phillips had “weaponized a commercial vehicle.”

Defense attorney Kelley Collier says he plans to appeal.
