RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A Virginia unlicensed day care provider has pleaded guilty after an infant died in her care while she was watching 16 children.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports 53-year-old Carrie C. Persichini pleaded guilty Thursday to several charges including felony child neglect in the 2016 death of 3-month-old Peter Hitt.
Persichini told police she’d put Peter and his twin sister, Ava, in a Pack ’n’ Play for a nap and found Peter facedown on his stomach with his head to his side. He had gone into cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Persichini was caring for nine children under age 5 and seven children under 12. State law requires licenses for home day care providers who watch five or more children.
Persichini’s sentencing is set for Jan. 4.
