SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - West Valley City has agreed to pay $650,000 to settle two federal court cases involving allegations of misconduct by police and narcotics officers.
The Salt Lake City Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/2hEqFoI ) that West Valley City awarded $500,00 to Terry and Brandy Christiansen. The couple filed a suit in 2014 alleging city police officers violated their civil rights and used excessive force during a 2012 drug bust.
City officials also agreed to pay $150,000 to Dante Donell Ketchens and Danielle Swasey. They claimed in a 2013 federal lawsuit that narcotics officers violated their constitutional rights when they detained their family and searched their home without a warrant in 2012.
West Valley City officials say the settlements avoided an expensive appeal process in the Christiansen case and a trial in the other case.
