ST. LOUIS (AP) - Officers shot and critically wounded a St. Louis man who refused to drop the sword and gun he was holding.

St. Louis County Police confronted the man at his home in south St. Louis County around 6:45 a.m. Sunday.

Sgt. Shawn McGuire says no one answered initially at the home. So officers looked inside and saw the man holding a sword and gun.

The man opened the door and let a dog out as the officers stepped back, but the dog did not approach officers.

The armed man refused to drop his weapons, so an officer shot him.

McGuire says the officers were in a difficult position.
