OPINION:
The Las Vegas shooting happened on Oct. 1. It was covered by the news media for four to five days thereafter, with conflicting reports about the timeline, the shooter and the hotel security staff. Plus, even more conflicting reports were available from witnesses at the hotel and the venue, supported by audio and video recordings.
And yet, for the past four weeks, there have been no continuing reports in the media. The investigating authorities, who promised to produce an accurate story — and to “get to the bottom” of the shooter’s motives — have issued no new information in over a month. Another mystery is that no media outlets have published articles questioning this dearth of coverage.
Is the purpose of this blackout to foster a sense of forgetfulness among the American public, particularly those not personally affected? How is the lack of resolution to the initial confusion and misreporting following this event not a priority for journalists?
