CUMMING, Ga. (AP) - A drunk driver struck a Georgia State Patrol trooper who was directing traffic in a suburb north of Atlanta.
The Georgia Department of Public Safety says 35-year-old Aaron DeGourville was directing traffic Monday morning in Cumming in Forsyth County when he was hit by a BMW driven by 44-year-old David Sommer, of Cumming.
DeGourville underwent surgery for a broken leg.
WSB-TV reports Sommer was arrested on a variety of charges including DUI and reckless driving.
Sommer worked for the Forsyth County Water and Sewer Department. He sent a letter of resignation Tuesday, which county spokeswoman Jodi Gardner says is effective immediately.
Officials say in the 1990s, Sommer was a county deputy.
