DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say two men died after their car left a Florida highway and crashed into a pond.

News outlets report that the crash occurred shortly after noon Thursday on Interstate 95 near Deerfield Beach.

Witnesses say the driver appeared to lost control after light rains in the area intensified. Northbound traffic was backed up for several miles after rescue workers responded.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane says crews found the car about 10 feet underwater. Both men were taken to a Pompano Beach hospital, where they died.
